The Trump administration is firing back at The New York Times after the paper published a 3,000-word “sob story” about a criminal illegal alien recently deported back to Jamaica.

“Why does The New York Times continue to peddle sob stories about criminal illegal aliens and ignore their victims?” asked Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary at the Department of Homeland Security.

The Trump administration deported Nascimento Blair, a convicted kidnapper, back to his home country of Jamaica in February.

The New York Times reports that Blair, now 44, began dealing marijuana in New York when he was 24, “which led to a kidnapping conviction.”

Blair was sentenced to 15 years in prison, and an immigration judge ordered him removed from the U.S. in 2008. Blair appealed his removal order, but the Board of Immigration Appeals dismissed his appeal.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested him on Feb. 3.

“On paper, Mr. Blair [fits] the profile of the people Mr. Trump says he wants to deport,” The New York Times writes, describing the profile as “those with criminal backgrounds.”

“But to Mr. Blair and his supporters, his life story was one of rehabilitation, nuanced and filled with qualities that they believe Mr. Trump’s deportation machine disregards as it flies out immigrants en masse,” the Times’ report continued.

Blair’s deportation back to Jamaica “raises a fundamental question Americans are grappling with as they consider the president’s immigration crackdown: Who deserves to stay?” the Times wrote.

According to the Trump administration, the question the Times raised has already been answered.

“President [Donald] Trump and [DHS Secretary Kristi] Noem have made it clear that we are prioritizing arresting and deporting the worst of the worst. That includes convicted kidnappers,” McLaughlin said, adding, “[w]e are restoring common sense to our immigration system.”

“Thanks to President Trump and Secretary Noem, this kidnapper was arrested and is now out of our country,” the assistant DHS secretary said.

The New York Times piece comes amid ongoing coverage of the deportation of an illegal alien from El Salvador, Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia.

Abrego Garcia has a history of domestic violence and gang affiliation, according to a court petition and police report, but some Democrat lawmakers claim the man, who had been residing in Maryland, was wrongfully deported.

Maryland Democrat Sen. Chris Van Hollen traveled to El Salvador last week to meet with Abrego Garcia. Four other Democrat lawmakers, Reps. Yassamin Ansari of Arizona, Maxine Dexter of Oregon, Maxwell Frost of Florida and Robert Garcia of California, followed suit and traveled to El Salvador this week to advocate for Abrego Garcia.

Recent polling from the Napolitan Institute found that 39% of U.S. voters say it is “appropriate for a U.S. senator to treat an illegal immigrant who lived in his state as a constituent,“ but 42% disagree.

A supermajority of American voters, 75%, say illegal immigration is bad for the country, but 80% believe legal immigration is good for the U.S., according to the poll.
