Former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn called NATO "a thing of the past" and suggested the United States should walk away from the military alliance as President Trump pulls Russian President Vladimir Putin closer.

During a Monday interview with Real America's Voice, Flynn argued to Eric Bolling that Putin would use nuclear force against Europe "if Russia feels threatened, you know, on their sovereign territory."

"And if Europe all of a sudden starts to do things that look as though they're going to take on his sovereignty, I mean, I'm just telling you that really, really dangerous times, and this is why we need, you know, cool heads to prevail," he said.

"Should we basically exit NATO?" Bolling wondered.

"Yeah, I think what Trump needs to do is he needs to put on the table that the United States will walk away from NATO if the Europeans don't understand what is at stake here," Flynn replied. "You know, maybe the usefulness and the utility of NATO has, you know, sort of spent its full amount of whatever, energy, right, I mean, at this point in time, but NATO may be a thing of the past, and there may be—may need to be a new security architecture."

Trump's former national security advisor also argued that the current president should have a closer relationship with Putin.

"It needs to be very professional," he remarked. "We're talking about two of the largest nuclear weapons holders on the planet, two great nations, you know, historically, culturally, and I think that what he's going to have to do, as he's done, you know, Joe Biden never called Putin once, not once."

"At least Trump needs to open up that relationship by talking, you know, when you're—at least when you're talking, you can talk about how do we achieve peace," Flynn added. "You know, we have to fight for peace as hard as we have to fight in war, and that is what President Donald J. Trump is trying to do."

Trump has reportedly tried to find a place for Flynn in his new administration.
