Ongoing talks between Ukraine and the U.S. garnered results Tuesday when Ukraine said that it was open to a 30-day ceasefire with Russia, CBS News reported.
Russia first invaded Ukraine in 2014 when it annexed Crimea, and began an all-out war in February 2022.
"Ukraine expressed readiness to accept the U.S. proposal to enact an immediate, interim 30-day ceasefire, which can be extended by mutual agreement of the parties, and which is subject to acceptance and concurrent implementation by the Russian Federation," the U.S. and Ukraine said in a joint statement released by the State Department.
"The United States will communicate to Russia that Russian reciprocity is the key to achieving peace."
The U.S. agreed and "will immediately lift the pause on intelligence sharing and resume security assistance to Ukraine," the statement read.
The negotiations had been ongoing for eight hours in Saudi Arabia with Secretary of State Marco Rubio representing the U.S.
Rubio said that the next step was to take the deal to the Russians, "and we hope that they'll say yes."
