US-Canada military 'tracks' Santa for 68th year

The joint US-Canadian military monitoring agency, NORAD, continues its tradition of tracking Santa's whereabouts. NORAD's Santa tracker dates back to 1955 when a newspaper ad mistakenly directed children to the military hotline. To avoid disappointing the kids, NORAD's director ordered his staff to track Santa's location. NORAD also sets up a temporary call centre to answer children's questions. Besides spreading holiday cheer, NORAD conducts aerospace and maritime operations, including monitoring for missile launches from North Korea.
