US faces $90 billion in tourism losses over Trump backlash: report

The U.S. economy is set to lose billions of dollars over foreign boycotts of President Donald Trump's tariffs and other policies.

Bloomberg reported on Tuesday that foreign travel to the US had decreased by almost 10% in the past year. A worst-case scenario would be a 0.3% hit to the US gross domestic product — about $90 billion — according to Goldman Sachs Group Inc estimates.

"[M]any potential visitors are now rethinking their vacation plans amid increased hostility at the border, rising geopolitical frictions and global economic uncertainty," Bloomberg reported.

One Canadian videographer, 34-year-old Curtis Allen, canceled his upcoming US trip after Trump imposed tariffs and said Canada should become the 51st state.

"We're not just staying home," Allen told the outlet. "We're going to go spend the same money somewhere else."

The Canadian didn't stop there. He also planned to cancel his Netflix subscription and boycott US products at the grocery store.

"Now it takes us double the time, because we're looking at where the products came from," he explained.

In recent weeks, Canadians have driven an 11% drop in hotel rates in the Northeast US. Airfares and car rental rates also fell in March.
