US prosecutors investigate an Indian billionaire on charges of bribery

Bloomberg reported that the United States Public Prosecution has begun investigating Indian billionaire Gautam Adani on charges of "offering bribery."

The agency indicated that the American prosecution group has expanded its investigations with representatives of the Indian Adani Group to determine whether it was involved in bribery, and the investigations will also include the company’s founder, billionaire Gautam Adani.

It is noteworthy that investigators want to determine whether Adani and its partners, including one of the richest men in India, Gautam Adani, were involved in paying bribes to Indian officials in exchange for preferential treatment for an energy project.

According to the agency, the investigation also includes Azure Power Global.

For its part, Adani Group announced that it is not aware of the investigations against its president.

The agency stated that US law allows federal prosecutors to investigate corruption cases abroad if they are linked to US investors or markets.

Gautam Adani (born June 24, 1962) is an Indian billionaire, founder and chairman of the Adani Group, an Ahmedabad-based multinational conglomerate involved in developing and operating ports in India. In 2022, his net worth was estimated at US$138.1 billion, making him the richest person in India and Asia.

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, he is the third richest person in the world.
