A new American study has shown that a cream made from the same drug Viagra can help improve sexual desire in women.
The results of the initial clinical trial revealed that women with sexual arousal disorder who used the cream experienced a significant improvement in their sex lives.
The cream contains the same substance sildenafil found in Viagra, and can be used 10 to 20 minutes before sex, as it works to expand the small arteries located just under the skin, which increases blood flow to the female sexual organ.
In the study, a team of scientists from two independent US research companies, along with Dare Bioscience, the San Diego-based company that developed the cream, recruited 33 women with sexual arousal disorder.
The women were asked to apply the cream shortly before having sex.
The results, published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, showed that women using Viagra cream experienced significant improvement with increased sexual desire.
"Trials of sildenafil tablets in women have shown marginal efficacy and intolerable side effects, but the rapidly absorbed cream could have fewer unwanted effects and a more rapid biological response," the research team said.
