Screams rang out as the crazed animals locked tusks and frantic handlers beat them with sticks in a desperate attempt to separate the pair.

Villagers hot-footed it out of the area as the beasts then begun a terrifying game of cat and mouse, thundering through Kerala, India.

Several people were injured in the frightening outburst including the mahouts of the two elephants.

The carnage took place at the Tharakkal temple Arattupuzha Pooram festival in Thrissur district, where the two creatures tussled in a tense standoff.

Video footage of the scene shows one of the elephants, Guruvayur Ravikrishnan, becoming aggressive and alarming onlookers.

Then he attempts to throw off his rider before turning his attention to another elephant, Puthuppally Arjunan.

As spectators watched on in horror, Guruvayur charged at Puthuppally, overpowering him as they smashed together and locked tusks.

Despite the efforts of handlers to intervene, the situation escalated as Guruvayur continued to push Puthuppally through the crowd and away from the temple.

An aerial shot shows Guruvayur pursuing Puthuppally two kilometers along a busy road before being brought under control.

This shocking incident occurred during the traditional pooram celebration.

During pooram elaborately decorated elephants carrying the deities of various temples come together for a ceremony.

It comes as a territorial male bull elephant charged at a safari truck filled with tourists.

Footage shows how the gigantic 11ft elephant attacks the bonnet of the truck with its trunk, again and again, in a bid to knock it over.

he safari truck, which was filled with tourists, is pushed onto its rear wheels by the force of the elephant and almost topples over before it thuds down – somehow upright.

The aggressive bull elephant begins the process again.
