Brave thrill-seekers have been submerged in water, trapped in small boxes, and even tormented by tarantulas, all for hours on end.

The house of horrors, in Tennessee, has been continuously dogged by complaints of violence and calls for it to be axed.

Anyone who finishes the experience is rewarded with $20,000USD (£15,500) – but so far no one has.

Owner Russ McKamey said if the things people said about him were true, he wouldn’t be free and running the experience.

He told the Daily Mail: “Either you actually complete the tour, which is not going to happen, or you mentally or physically are at such a breaking point that it’s not safe for you to continue and I need to take you out.”

McKamey does try and weed out “knuckleheads” who try and get into the house and ruin it for everybody.

He describes the haunted house as a “mental game” or “survival boot camp” where none of the actors rough you up or lay a hand on you.

He said: “You’re not going to get through it because it’s really tough and I’m really good at the psychological aspects.

“My skill is getting into somebody’s brain and doing what I want with it for the show.”

Russ ensures all participants watch a two-hour video entitled “And Then There Were None”.

The film is a compilation of all everyone who failed to complete the haunted experience.

During the video the phrase “You really don’t want to do this” is repeatedly spoken.

At one point, visitors had to sigh a 40-page waiver that warned: “Your hair may be chopped off, dentistry may be done, you may have a tooth extracted.”

McKamey told the Guardian: “Pretty soon it becomes real… There’s no break. It’s non-stop. The whole goal is to get you exhausted so we have better control over you.”

Visitors must be 21 or over and need to pass a background check, a drug test, and have proof of medical insurance.

A Change.org petition set up in 2019 has been signed 193,000 times – dubbing McKamey Manor “a torture chamber under disguise”.

One Californian said she was waterboarded and feared she was going to die when visiting McKamey’s San Diego precursor to the current house.

In a YouTube clip, Amy Milligan showed herself being pushed to the ground, slapped, and pulled by her hair but she said the worst experiences didn’t make her cut.

Russ told WGNTV: “I’m a very straight-laced conservative guy, but here I run this crazy haunted house that people think is this torture factory, fetish factory.

“All of these things that it’s not, but people believe that based upon the films that I have made.”

Russ uses everything from intense audio, lighting and fog effects in his experience.

Other warnings include: “Wet conditions, physically demanding environments close contact with creatures (you might be touched), very real and graphic scenes of horror.”
