The Ukrainian leader hailed James as a “heroic person” who is forever “in our hearts”.

In a personal message to James’s parents, he said: “Thank you for bringing up such a man.”

Mr Zelensky added on the Piers Morgan Uncensored show: “Your boy gave his life, the most precious thing he had.

“It’s a great sorrow and I want you to know we appreciate it so much.

“He definitely is in our hearts, a heroic person.”

Zelensky continued: “No matter where he comes from, he definitely is in our hearts, in Ukrainian hearts and British hearts.

“That is a heroic person. It’s important to speak of it then it stays in the memory.

“We all speak about him with great, great honour, and with pain. Thank you for bringing up such a man.”

Piers replied: “Well, thank you for your very kind words, it will mean a lot to his family and friends I am sure.”

James, of Huddersfield, died minutes into an infantry mission to resupply eastern front troops.
